Question by Cathy: What is a good technique for painting muscle striations?
I’m doing this painting on my anatomy teacher’s wall of a face that shows the muscles on one half and the bones on the other half (it’s about 3 and 1/2 feet tall). I was hoping someone out there would have a good technique for painting the muscle striations (mainly on the frontalis, just because it’s so big) I would just paint lines throughout the muscle, but I could see that being tedious and I would probably mess it up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

for my anatomy classes,i used to paint the entire muscle a pale base coat of paint/color pencil and then add in a few striations/lines with a darker tone of the same color….got a pretty good effect with that technique…also leave out a few white highlights in between to show some shine and gloss to the muscle and also to bring out a 3D feel to it….

As the saying goes “Old habits die hard.” Hence, building a strong foundation on Face Painting Techniques will go a long way in your face painting career (or even hobby) in making your “work” more fun and relaxed.

The following are good tips to being with.

Base Color

Always apply a base color first using a damp sponge. A white base coat is recommended since it is easy to cover it up with any other colors, even the lighter and brighter colors sit well on the white base.

Sponge It

Speaking about sponge, it is often the preferred choice for applying base colors and filling in large spaces. The most common form is of course the square or rectangle sponge. After all, this is probably the only shape you can get from your local painting store. I would suggest you try cutting it into triangle shapes for 2 reasons. First, the multiple sharp edges allow you to get into finer details on the face using different colors – 3 edges, 3 colors. It saves a lot of work rinsing the same sponge over and over again in order to reuse it for other face paint colors. Second, you can use small triangle sponges as a “stamp” to put patterns over the face designs or on the arms and hands.

Deeper Color

To get a deeper color effect, it is advisable to apply multiple thin layers as compared to one thick coat. However, it is important that you ensure the first layer is dry before you proceed to apply the second or even a third layer. This is easily achievable if you are using water based make-up like the Snazaroo face paint.

Color Mixing

This requires a little bit of practice and experience if you haven’t done this before. Apply the first color on the face, and while the paint is still wet, quickly apply another color over it and you will get a very nice artistic color mix effect. This is completely different from blending 2 colors in the palette first before you use it. Such an approach only creates a uniform mixing of colors.

Getting yourself acquainted with good face painting books is a good way to stay updated with new techniques or ideas to stay in the game.

Take note that excessive water in the sponge may produce streaky results.

Question by Gen: How is a face painted so that it always is looking at the viewer?
I would like to know the specific techniques involved so that no matter where the viewer moves, the face and eyes of the painted subject seem to be looking right at the viewer. Examples are the Mona Lisa and the old WWI poster, Uncle Sam wants you!

Question by curious: How do you apply white face paint smoothly?
my face paint is Snazaroo, color white. It’s made in UK. I’ve tried two different techniques when I applied the paint to my face, cotton balls and a paintbrush. The paint looks very rough with cotton balls. So far the paintbrush is the smoothest but not enough, it still looks kind of rough and you could still see the streaks. Please help, I plan to use it for a geisha or maiko look so i need it as smooth as possible.
